Hans and Margret were desperate to escape Paris as Nazi tanks rolled in in 1940. Having no transportation, Hans assembled bicycles for them from spare parts. Before dawn they dressed warmly and tucked a few possessions in their coats. Amazingly, they bicycled 800 km. through France, found the means to sail to Brazil, and eventually reached New York. Even more amazing was what they tucked inside their coats…the manuscript and sketches for Curious George! The first in the series was published the following year.
